2022 Houston Calligraphy Guild RetreatThe Houston Calligraphy Guild 2022 Retreat will take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 23rd, 24th and 25th at the Westchase Marriott; 2900 Briar Park Drive, Houston (between Westheimer and Richmond, just east of Beltway 8). WELCOME SWCC GUILDS! We are excited to include all of the Southwest Calligraphy Conference Guilds in our biennial Retreat, and we look forward to spending time with you. A talented calligrapher and bookbinder, Betty will teach us Pointed Pen Uncial, a beautiful hand which was originally a broad pen hand before it became so elegant. Betty is a member of Fort Worth Calligraphy Guild. We are glad she is travelling from Richardson to share her teaching talent and love of calligraphy. Supply fee $5 1B) Celtic Knotwork Possibilities / Suzi Ickles Suzi is a talented artist/origami ninja/calligrapher and member of the Waco Calligraphy Guild. In this class, you will learn to add ancient symmetrical enhancements that make pages come together. Celtic Knotwork Possibilities has been lauded by Waco members who warn it’s highly addictive. It looks complicated, but we can all do it (says Suzi). No supply fee (1C) Gelli Plate Gamboree / Lynn Ayres Gelli Plate and Calligraphy make for a Gamboree of fun. Using acrylics, alcohol inks and pastels with calligraphy and a gelli print plate you’ll make some beautiful pages. Make those pages into a journal and take home a treasure. Lynn Ayres is an accomplished calligraphic teacher from our own Houston Guild. Supply fee $10 SATURDAY AFTERNOON SESSION II CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (2-5:30pm) (2A) Never Ending Neuland / Cindy Haller Modern scribes have capitalized on Rudolf Koch’s 1923 typeface, Neuland, to transform it into a wide variety of hand-lettered renditions. Cindy will show how to create unlimited lettering possibilities from this fun and important hand. Cindy is a masterful teacher from our Houston Guild and we are blessed to have her teach this class! Supply fee $3 (2B) Wonderful Wedgies/ Lynda Jolly Learn how to use a wedge brush to make florals and other decorative embellishments (butterflies?). Beautiful results can be used to enhance your calligraphy, decorate envelopes, make cards – just about anything. If time permits, we also will learn a very simple calligraphic alphabet that can be used with your artistic creations. Lynda comes to us from Tulsa although she’s been a Houston Guild member for ages. Supply fee $5 (2C and 3C) It’s a Banner Year –/Laurie Pearson Come and create a lovely fabric banner. Laurie will lead you through the process of painting and lettering with a variety of mediums and techniques. On Day 1 you’ll create an exemplar of techniques that you’ll apply to a larger canvas on Day 2. You’ll take home a beautiful completed banner. Laurie is a Houston Guild member as well as a wonderful artist, calligrapher, graphic designer and a creative, thoughtful teacher. You’ll enjoy learning from her and you’ll create a treasure. NOTE: Choose this class option for Saturday afternoon AND Sunday morning classes. Supply fee $10 (FOR 2 DAYS) SUNDAY MORNING SESSION III CLASS DESCRIPTIONS (9am-12:30pm) (3A) Mirror Writing / Maureen Vickery In this class you’ll learn a modern calligraphy alphabet for writing whimsical and inspirational quotes, then design and write the quote on your (own) medium-sized mirror. Maureen is a professional wedding calligrapher and hand engraver, an accomplished and published artist, as well as editor and publisher of Calligraphy Crush Magazine. Check her out on Instagram @pendancestudio and @calligraphycrushmagazine. She is a longtime Houston Guild member. Supply fee $3 (3B) Bodacious Bead Book/ Cori Austin Cori will show you how some simple materials can be easily transformed into a gorgeous beaded book. First, you’ll make the beads and while they dry, you’ll assemble a 3-signature book with a variety of papers. Cori is a calligrapher, book binder, journal and multi-media artist.
