The Houston Calligraphy Guild Retreat will take place Friday, Saturday and Sunday,October 9 - 11, 2020 at the Westchase Marriott, 2900 Briar Park Drive, Houston, TX 77042. We are thrilled to include members from the Guilds in the Southwest Conference and instructors from Tulsa, Waco, New Orleans, San Antonio and Houston.

SATURDAY 2 SESSION CLASS DESCRIPTION (SESSIONS 1A and 2A) - 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM
Adolf Bernd Letters

In recent years, Adolf Bernd (1909-1994) has been recognized for his wonderful interpretations of letters and the use of color and shape to transform them into decorative pieces in their own right. During this two-part workshop we will look at Bernd’s work, the sources of his inspiration, and how his work has inspired others. You will then use your learning and your personal inspiration to develop ‘Berndesc’ styled pieces using structured but simple processes, while maintaining a freedom not often associated with calligraphy.
The morning session will focus on dissecting Bernd’s work and exploring methods of achieving the ‘seductive’ use of color and tone he used so well. The afternoon session will focus on putting into practice what you have learned, and developing your own style and pieces of art.
Wolfgang Thun is an Australian calligrapher who has been involved in calligraphy since the mid 1980's. Although he has a keen interest in contemporary calligraphy, his work is very influenced by traditional styles of calligraphy. He holds a calligraphy certificate from Meadowbank TAFE (Sydney, Australia) and has studied with Sheila Waters, Olive Bull, Denise Brown, Carl Rohrs, Mike Gold, Gemma Black and Yukimi Anand. Wolfgang has been a member of the Houston Calligraphy Guild since moving to Houston from Australia five years ago and is currently their Education Chair.
SATURDAY MORNING SESSION CLASS DESCRIPTION (SESSION 1B) - 9:00 AM
Easy & Simple Watercolor Flowers

SUPPLY FEE $6
In this class you’ll be creating your own watercolor representations of various flowers, such as daffodils, tulips, lilies, or whatever flowers you can imagine. You will sketch the flowers with pencil and then use an Elegant Writer or Vis-à-Vis marker to add interesting colors before painting. Simple flower designs from bulb catalogues will be your inspiration. The goal is not perfection, but merely to present the “essence” of flowers, so no artistic talent is required! Water color paper will be provided, but you will need a brush and any type of watercolor paints. Everyone will have at least one masterpiece when we are done, and hopefully some hand-painted cards, as well.
Lynda Jolly has been interested in calligraphy and art since an early age. She has studied calligraphic arts with accomplished teachers such as Timothy Botts and Peter Thornton and has shared her talent and creativity by teaching classes in calligraphy, color, layout and design and bookbinding. Lynda is currently studying watercolor painting under Marie Natale, an artist based in New Jersey. In her spare time, Lynda enjoys time at the beach with husband, grown children and baby granddaughter.

Crossed Structure Exposed Stitch Book

This workshop will cover instructions to create a crossed structure book that exposes the stitching handiwork on its spine. Because the structure lies flat when opened, the book is perfect for lettering practice, journal writing or sketch books. You will create the entire book in this workshop that, along with the detailed handouts, will become a model for later creating your own personalized journals.
Mixed media artist Teresa J. Wilber of Tulsa, OK, teaches calligraphy, paper arts and book arts at Tulsa Community College, Philbrook Museum School, Waterworks Art Studio, as well as throughout the U.S. Her calligraphic works have been commissioned by corporations for honorarium awards, including her unique honor-scrolls and handmade scroll cases for Phillips Petroleum Company, Williams Companies, University of Oklahoma, and other enterprises. With a BA degree in American Studies and a minor in Art History from Oklahoma State University, Teresa has taught Humanities, and 2-D and 3-D Design at Tulsa Community College. Active in the arts, Teresa is a board member of the Calligraphy Guild of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and a recipient of its Honorary Life Membership, as well as a past board member of Living Arts of Tulsa. Several of her artist books have been published recently in issues of Letter Arts Review and Bound and Lettered.

Close Textured Letters

This fun, versatile, textured lettering class is based on Barbara Close’s versal hand. By first creating an outline of the letter, we’ll fill the space with pieces of scrap paper, textured stamps, gems, foil, stickers. Actually, anything goes for collaging. Terry will bring plenty of that, so you can all share!
Terry is an accomplished calligrapher and calligraphy teacher. Her career began in the late 1980's. After joining the Houston Calligraphy Guild and taking her first workshop, she was hooked. Learning or teaching calligraphic hands has improved her skill levels and enthusiasm. She uses various hands everyday and encourages students to do the same. She says it provides quiet pleasure in a hectic world.

Color for Calligraphy

Patti will cover many topics from her experiences in Color and Design class (both as a student and teacher) to help you creatie color harmony and rich color relationships in your artwork. Discussion topics include: Color Theory, Mixing Color, Color Terms, How to construct and use a Color Wheel and Value Scale with gouache, How to expand your color palette with confidence through a logical use of colors from your Color Wheel and more!
Patti Adams is a member of the New Orleans Lettering Arts Association, an award-winning signature member of the Louisiana Watercolor Society and owner and a previous art director of the Garden District Gallery from 2009-2015. She has studied calligraphy with Denis Brown, Georgia Angelopoulos and Reggie Ezell and received her fine art training at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art, where she now teaches courses in Color & Design, Calligraphy and Gold Leaf Gilding. In her parallel artistic life, she is a flutist and founding member with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and has been on the music faculty of Loyola University’s College of Music and Fine Arts since 1997. Lettering with Folded Pens Jeannie Dittmann, Instructor

Learn how to make your own folded metal pen and how to use it successfully as a tool to write contemporary, fun calligraphic letters and phrases. You’ll walk away from this class with loving the folded pen as much as Jeannie does.
Jeanne Dittmann has studied calligraphy for 23 years, but her love affair with calligraphy started in the 5th grade when she watched her teacher write fancy names on certificates. She has taught at University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McLennan Community College, and Baylor University Continuing Education, as well as at the Waco Calligraphy Guild. For the past two years, she has been the box office and marketing manager for Baylor Theatre and her folded pen lettering is featured in this year’s season brochure (www.baylor.edu/theatre)! She and her husband, a Baylor physics professor, and their two teenage sons have lived in Central Texas for 15 years, but none of them are really Texans. In her spare time, Jeanne loves to play word games and mahjong (the real deal, not the computer version) and sing in her church choir.

Lombaric Versals

Your calligraphic journey will be influenced by the addition of Lombardic Versals to your art. Influenced by the Uncial and Versal alphabets, Lombardic capitals are decorative letterforms. Often used at the beginning of a text, they make a powerful impact in a piece of calligraphy. You will learn how to use color, hairline decorations, decorative shapes, and gold gouache to create the ornamental letters.
Dolores has taught many wonderful classes for the Houston Calligraphy Guild and Retreat over the years. Her experience, amazing ability and fun teaching tactics are well received, and we always want to see what she will bring next. Lombardic Versals will be a fun class!

A Foundational Variation
Laurie Pearson, Instructor

A versatile hand, Laurie uses this Foundational variation in her calligraphic art. The hand is upright, compressed and very angular. Using a Mitchell 6, letters are 12-13 nibs high and have a contemporary, springy quality that uses no guidelines. You will love learning and using this hand and come away with a beautiful finished calligraphic piece.
Native Houstonian, Laurie J. Pearson knew from an early age that she wanted to be an artist. Growing up in a creative family, Laurie was encouraged to try many different artistic mediums. Her first memory of calligraphy was at age 10 when visiting Williamsburg, Virginia. The docent demonstrated writing with a quill pens on parchment paper, which was so compelling. After dabbling with lettering throughout high school and then taking courses in college, Laurie went to the very first meeting of the Houston Calligraphy Guild in 1979. Now almost 40 years later, Laurie is a free-lance graphic designer and an active Guild member in Houston, Texas.
