The Houston Calligraphy Guild
was founded in 1979 as a non-profit, 501 (c) (3) organization dedicated to teaching calligraphy as an art form. We are celebrating our 45th year in 2024 as a member-run organization with several founding members still active participants. We encourage our members regardless of skill level to participate in committees, teaching programs, and community outreach, or by offering a helping hand to other members.
Whether you are a beginner or a skilled calligrapher, we encourage you to explore our website, learn more about the Guild, and consider joining. Membership is open to all, and we offer individual, family and student memberships. Meetings are held the second Saturday of each month and take place at the Tracy Gee Community Center, 3599 Westcenter Drive, Houston, TX 77042.
From September through May, our schedule includes an optional early bird class at 9:00 a.m. The official Guild meeting starts at 10:00 a.m. with a short business meeting followed by a main meeting program. During the year, a variety of mini-workshops and clinics occur after the main program. During June, July, and August, the Guild’s summer workshops focus on a single calligraphic script or a variety of related skills. An extensive library of calligraphy books is available to members for individual study.
A variety of weekend workshops and classes are held throughout the year by visiting artists and master calligraphers. In addition, the Guild holds a biennial weekend retreat featuring a wide choice of classes for members.
We are actively involved with the Houston community. Members demonstrate calligraphy and interact with Houston children and families at schools, libraries, museums, the craft center and events across the city. In addition, we support active-duty military and first responders with cards and gifts.
