WEEKEND WORKSHOP: MOVED TO ABSTRACTION - A 2-Day Workshop with Mike Gold
WHEN: October 5 & 6, 2019
WHERE: Newspring Art Studio, 8945 Long Point #100, Houston, Texas 77055
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: This workshop will feature exercises to bring out the artist within you. We will look at some of the principles and ideas that guided Picasso, the Abstract Expressionists and others in creating contemporary calligraphic art. Collage was key to both Picasso and Braque in developing their work and modernist visual vocabulary and we will use it here, too. Various other media and tools will also be explored. This workshop is designed for calligraphers looking to move beyond letter forms and traditional compositions and who are willing to bend and break rules you learned as a calligrapher. In this class, letters are seen as line, shape and form and compositions are works that reflect a personal vision that may or may not be readable. You will be working in a no-stress environment where the emphasis is on experimentation and play. Download Workshop Brochure.

INSTRUCTOR: Mike Gold worked as a lettering designer in the social expressions business for 28 years. He has an M.A. in Visual Communications and has studied with many outstanding teachers over the years. Mike has taught around the country and at several international calligraphy conferences. His personal work has been featured in Letter Arts Review many times over the past 20-plus years and is in many private collections. This summer, he was invited to be one of five international teachers at the Summer School in Winter conference in Australia. Mike’s philosophy and approach to making non-traditional calligraphic art is explained in this 32-page fully illustrated book, Lines to Live By, published by John Neal, Bookseller. Mike's joy is exploring the corridors of calligraphy that have been less traveled, the path where words and letters are design elements with which to play with line, shape and form, where creating a visual statement is more important than writing a readable text. As Lee Krasner has written, "If the alphabet is A to Z, I want to move with it all the way, not only from A to C.
